A Study of Natural Killer Cell Activity from the Peripheral Blood of Leprosy Patients
Choi Shi-Ryong

Lee Chong-Hoon
Abstract
The K_(562) tumor cell a highly susceptible target for natural killer (NK) cell lysis by the lymphocytes of human peripheral blood. In an experiment with blood samples of leprosy patients, the natural killer cell mediated cytotoxicity (NKMC) against ^(51)Cr-K_(562) as a target cell was studied in 39 leprosy patients (12 with lepromatous type, 11 with tuberculoid type and 16 with borderline group) and 11 normal control.
In a comparison between the effector/target cells ratio as 50:1, the NKMC was found to be more significantly decreased in leprosy patients than in the control of a normal healthy group. It was concluded that the NK cell activity of leprosy patients was shown as being quite suppressed during the clinical course. On the other hand, E-rosette forming cells, there is no great difference between leprosy patients and the healthy group.
